Devecol is an information resource for those working to bring about sustainable development at the local level.

Devecol is a contraction of 'development' and 'ecology', evoking the necessary blending of people's striving for a better life with the ecological processes that ensure the sustainability of their livelihoods.

An ecological filter for document searches

Sustainable development workers may feel they are flooded with information in the form of newsletters, guidelines, manuals, and reports. At the same time, they often confront difficulties in finding documents that are relevant to the environmental conditions of the locality where they are working or planning an activity. This is especially true of documents about experiences in other countries or even other continents. Although the Internet is rapidly overcoming geographic distance with online bibliographies as well as documents, it is still difficult to find ecologically relevant antecedents.

The DEVECOL system employs an ecological filter for finding site-specific literature on rural development and research so that your search yields results that are relevant to your location. The ecological filters used are maps on which the user can find documents according to terrain, soils or climate. These criteria are also available in Devecol's document search query function which complements the visual search.
